Old Guys Really Do Rule

Old Guys Rule! Cornwall walking Football side announces major new backer.

Troon AFC Walking Football are absolutely delighted to announce that they have agreed a kit sponsorship deal with the internationally acclaimed clothing and merchandise company ‘Old Guys Rule’.

Jim Wilson, Director of Old Guys Rule UK said, "Like many people, I’ve only recently learned how popular Walking Football is and I think it’s a great way for the over 50’s to get and stay fit. We were honoured when Troon AFC contacted us about sponsorship and we jumped at the chance to support such an inspirational team. Two of the team's over 70 year olds have even been invited to trial for the England Squad! and we felt we really had to get on board with these guys; they epitomise everything that we, as a company, hold dear and they are showing everyone that Old Guys Rule!"

Troon AFC Walking Football was established just under 12 months ago, in partnership with our village football club Troon AFC in this small and beautiful Cornish village. Our walking football club has grown tremendously in popularity, from an initial 4 players to over 50 signed on members and over 20 regular participants, playing for two hours every week.

Walking football is a variant of association football but is a slower and calmer version of the game aimed at helping and encouraging people aged 50+ to stay mobile and active. Due to the difference between regular and walking football, it can more readily involve players who have lesser mobility or familiarity with the traditional game. The manner in which the sport is played promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst also producing the least stress on the body. It also helps participants maintain an active lifestyle, promote inclusion and involvement, thus reducing social isolation The improvements and developments in participants' mental and emotional health are now being recognised by health and medical practitioners.

Chris Jones, Coach and Chairman of the Troon Walking Football explained, “to have such a renowned and recognised company such as Old Guys Rule as our kit sponsors is an incredible honour and beyond our wildest expectations. Their philosophy and outlook is perfectly matched to what the whole ethos of walking football should be about. You’re never too old to get out, have fun and live your life to the fullest. Our players ages range from 50 to 80+, for some it’s their only opportunity to get out of the house and socialise. To be doing things now that they thought were way back beyond lost in their years of youth, is absolutely fantastic the smiles and laughter is what it’s all about.

Troon have had players trial for regional teams and recently had two players in their 70s trial for the England National Side.

Old Guys Rule was established in the USA in 2003 as a tribute to the legendary American surfer Doug Craig. One day Doug and his professional surfer son Don were out enjoying a surfing session on the magnificent California Coastline. While watching his father catch a perfect peeling right hand wave Don turned to his surfer buddy and mused 'Gee - Old Guys Rule'.

The seed of Old Guys Rule was planted that day and has since grown and developed both across the United States and Internationally!

Old Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of people who have incredible energy, a passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule is to be seen and worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over.

‘Old Guys Rule’ kick off on the South West Walking Football Pitches.

South West based Menswear and Apparel Company, Old Guys Rule UK, has recently been signed up as the sponsor for Troon AFC Walking Football Club in Cornwall.

As they get older a lot of people may feel frustrated by not being able to do some of the activities they used to love doing when they were younger but Troon AFC Walking Football Club have given ageing a Red Card.

Walking football tends to be aimed at the over 50’s age group. Unlike regular football the over-head height restrictions and indirect free kicks ensure that the sport is played safely with full consideration to the participants’ age. The teams are smaller too with either 5 or 6-a-side. As a result of these rules games are played at a slower pace, thus reducing the threat of pain, discomfort and injury, with players briskly walking through matches. This allows people who have loved the sport all their lives to once again safely and get back to playing. It also introduces the sport to people who perhaps have never considered playing before.

"According to the Walking Football Association we are the third biggest club in the UK, outstripping even Manchester City, and we have only been running a year" says Chris Jones, Coach and Chairman of Troon AFC.  A lot of the team wear Old Guys Rule clothing off the pitch so we are thrilled to be wearing their brand on the pitch too. The Old Guys Rule sponsorship is so valuable to us, not only for the current team but they will also help us take that next step into getting the word out there to more people of an unmentionable age, that walking football is for them and that it can make a real and positive difference to their lives."
