Autumn News 23

Welcome to Troon AFC Walking Football Autumn News

Dear Walking Footballers,

First of all, apologies for the large gap between newsletters this Autumn.  It has been a hard couple of months.

As you know, On September 22nd, we lost the lovely Eddie Boyd to a sudden and unexpected heart attack.  This left us all shocked and devastated.  Eddie leaves behind his beloved wifey, Julie, and a large family.  His unwavering positivity and deafening encouragement will be sorely missed.  In case you missed it, here are some of the tributes paid by his WF family:

Dave H. : Any memory of Eddie makes me smile. Strong as an ox yet gentle as a lamb. So enthusiastic and positive, never heard him complain about anything, ever. He had a way of being the centre of everything without ever knowingly drawing attention to himself. He was a big part of Troon Walking Football Club and will be sorely missed.

Dave Sh.: I haven’t got the correct words to say how nice Eddie was.

Markus: Such sad and shocking news. He was a lovely and funny guy. You'll be so, sadly missed.

Christine:  RIP Eddie my friend.  Such a lovely and kind man.  I’ll miss all your banter and football will not be the same without you.  I’m going to miss you lots.  Your footie wife xxx

Simon: I will miss the banter I had with him at football, he always had a quick come back with a cheeky smile, made everyone laugh with his bull in a China style of playing football , always fouling ,always pleading his innocence and making us all laugh, I will miss him chasing me around the pitch as we passed words to each other in fun, I will miss the big guy , there will only ever be one Eddie,  and I'm honoured to call him a friend.

Phil J.: Always friendly and always helpful. I will always think of Eddie smiling and joking - whilst denying he had ever been running! I believed you Eddie! We will all miss you Eddie.

Phil B. : Top man, true gent, running in walking football will now be known as doing an Eddie! Gone but never forgotten !

Lin: He was such a character & caring guy, he will definitely be missed.

Ann: You will be so missed Eddie

Phil W.: Always a gentleman, always a character but also never gave up . The Eddie toe punt will live on in our footy world.A really lovely guy who I bonded with as aircraft engineers in our past and the fleet air arm respect!

Jerry: I will always think of Eddie's enthusiasm,  head down going for goal. He was a joy to be around. A gentleman and a gentle, man.

Peter G: I got the impression that Eddie would run through brick walls for his family and friends, many of us encountered his run through brick walls on the pitch whether we were in opposition or on his team.

Total gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.

Rich Wales: Such sad news for such a lovely gentleman.

Chris J.: In my life I have had, on very rare occasions, the strangest of feelings on meeting a person for the very first time. It’s incredible, it's as if a lightning flash goes off before me and I know that the person I’ve just met is someone amazingly special and will be someone important in my life and my journey.

I can probably count these occasions in my life so far on the fingers of one hand. The most obvious and memorable was the first time I saw Sarah but believe it or not meeting  Eddie for the very first time was also just one of those rare occasions. We had only just begun our walking football club at Troon and new members were arriving on a regular basis and to be honest I was struggling with names, faces and all the many different ways to help me distinguish between all the Peters, Pauls and Phils that were suddenly descending on us. Then the door of Pool Academy Sports Hall opened up and what a sight to behold. There in front of me was a guy who could only be described as one of the most solid and hardened figures I had ever seen before in my life. He looked like someone who was just missing a couple of props to hold up a collapsing mining shaft. In Wales I remember from my childhood we had people that looked something like this chap but they were usually holding a sheep under each arm. He looked like he was in the wrong place. I began to think that someone must be running a rugby club somewhere else in the school unbeknownst to us. He didn’t look like a footballer, he actually didn’t look like a rugby player either come to think of it. In fact what did he look like?

Well first of all he was absolutely filthy. His hands were hardened and black to the touch. His clothes were bedraggled, clothes that had seen better days, many moons in the far distant past and trainers that seemed to be literally held together by their owners force of will. Over one shoulder he had the most worn out and battered rucksack that I’d ever seen in my life. I honestly thought for a moment that a homeless person had wandered in off the street. It didn’t cross my mind to question why a homeless person would want to come and play walking football. Or why a homeless person would pay 3 very valuable pounds of their obviously scant and very precious monetary resources to kick a ball about with a large number of 50+ strangers.

Then he spoke and told us his name and the mystery deepened even further. Here there was no Cornish local accent, nor a bland neutral BBC English that seemed to pervade the majority of players that had joined us, but one from across the Irish sea .

This strange sight had an incredible effect on me. Now, for once, I had someone that I could easily identify and remember- a unique and very memorable individual Mr Eddie Boyd.

Eddie kindly explained that he had just come from work and I suddenly realised that this was no vagrant but a very decent, honest hard working man who dealt with a whole world of manly stuff far beyond my previous working experience of softened management and delicate unblemished hands, hence his appearance and apparel.

Over time we learnt that Eddie was a man with an incredible story, a background of a life well lived of a loving and incredibly large ( and increasingly growing year on year) family! This was a man who worked with his hands, carrying, fixing, welding. In his life he had worked on ships, fixed helicopters and wrestled sheep to be shorn. He was an amazing character.

As for his footballing skills? He played the game for 5 years with his Troon walking Football Family he was one of our longest serving players.

His footballing skills certainly improved over time that probably could not be said about his understanding and appreciation of the rules of the game. His idea of non contact was minimal at the best and his definition of walking was pretty slipshod as well. He always played with a smile on his face as people would regularly just bounce off his sturdy frame and end up on their bottoms. Always a friendly hand would reach out to lift up the unfortunate victim who had had the temerity to come into Eddie’s time zone. “Up you get mukka'' he would say and the person would get up and reflect on their encounter with an immovable object. Sarah soon had a nickname for him ‘Gentleman Eddie’ how true and perceptive that was.

He enjoyed reffing and applying the rules of the game in his own unique and baffling way. The whistle of power was something he enjoyed using and he was always keen to volunteer to help out with anything and everything.

Without doubt he was the most memorable, loved and respected member of our Troon Walking Football family.

At training and tournaments he was always vocal, encouraging, supporting and motivating his team mates. So much so that other people would literally have to move away from him for fear of having their hearing irreparably damaged by Eddie’s vociferous rallying cries. His shouting,”keep them in” extolling his players to stop the opposition from getting the ball out of their defensive area will live with me forever and should rightfully be enshrined in any future walking football coaching manual.

I was so proud and honoured to present Eddie with the very first Troon Unsung Hero award at this years awards night. This will now be renamed as ‘ The Eddie Boyd Memorial Unsung Hero’ award in the years to come. Pretty big boots for anyone to fill- a truly hard act to follow.

That is what he was to us, his walking football family. A true gent, a true friend. Always willing to put himself out for someone else. A smile, an encouraging word, a joke to brighten someone else’s day. A volunteer to ref, to carry bags to a car, to lift a trolley always putting others before himself. An amazing fellow, a true inspiration.

My final memory of Eddie was a typical one. It was last Sunday on finals day.

I have been having a difficult time of things lately. On Sunday I was struggling more than ever with both past events and present day frustrations getting the better of me. I was at a very low point. I was at my worst, angry at myself, angry at the ref, angry at the world and I remember Eddie shouting to me… “Chris, you're better than this.” I was struggling and then even at that lowest point Eddie was still being positive, still encouraging, still supporting, still seeing something in me that I had lost sight of. That’s the last thing he ever said to me and I tried to push it away and now I’ll never get to thank him for sticking with me and believing in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself.

Eddie’s passing was a huge shock and it will leave a gaping hole in so many people's lives. I am so glad that I met him, that first lightning moment that has led to so many happy, loving memories for myself and his friends and teammates. It really won’t be the same without him around. I am proud to have known him as a friend for I can honestly say that in my near 60 years on this planet I have rarely met someone as genuine, honest and decent as Eddie. Love, hugs and respect my friend

Emma: On Sunday Eddie told me stories of his Naval days (my dad was in the Fleet Air Arm like Eddie)  We laughed all the way up.  Eddie even told me about the guy they found at sea floating in a chest freezer.  I'm so sad not to be able to hear more stories from Eddie, I will miss seeing him in Tesco and definitely at football.

Jacqui: Such a genuine, lovely guy who stood out as a kind soul; Eddie made me feel so welcome when I joined the Club. Deeply missed!

Sarah: Eddie was the person who made the banana cake possible and he’s why it’s in our description of ‘fun, friendship, fitness, footie and banana cake’. We had left over bananas from our first event and I was urging people to take one. I offered one to Eddie and said ‘have the last banana or I’ll have to make banana cake’. So I made the first banana cake and a legend was born. Every time I made one, because Eddie said he was addicted to it, I made an extra cake and gave it sneakily to Eddie.

I’ll always think of Eddie when I make that cake in the future.

Liz: Tony and I met Eddie years ago when out walking our dog and he was with his dog on the grass opposite his home, he always spoke and over the years got quite friendly, next we knew Tony went to football at Troon with George and who should be there but Eddie.  After Tony passed away Eddie eventually plucked up enough courage and came to see how I was and eventually encouraged me to come to football, he might have been larger than life but he was shy and considerate, he was a top guy I will always remember him

Pete H.: Eddie was an absolute gentleman, whose enthusiasm and happiness (and running) made him a joy to

be with and to know.

Pat: I'm so sorry to hear what has happened. Eddie, as mentioned above, was a gentleman with a warm personality. When I first started to play walking football, as with joining any new group, it's difficult at first to remember names and faces. Not so with Eddie. His persona, style of play and lovely Belfast accent made an instant impression.

Nigel J: He was unique in every way and always a gent

Anthony: I am sure that his family and the Troon WF team will really miss him.

Geoff: Gone but not forgotten Eddie will be sad not to hear your quiet voice on the touchline shouting keep them in and come on Troon what a great bloke

Clive: Always a pleasure whether playing on Eddie's team or against him. Such a lovely chap and will be sorely missed.

We will be holding a memorial match on Friday 10th November at Cornwall College Camborne astro, 7:15pm ko to remember our dear friend and to raise money for the family’s chosen charity.  Please attend if you can, even if you’re not playing, and donate what you can afford to the Macmillan collection on the day.

2. The League

Well done to everyone who represented the team this year.  We finished second in the western division and played hard on finals day.  Sadly the whole day was marred by appalling refereeing. Two FA refs present had never seen walking football with one admitting that he had not even read the rules and another saying that “jogging is not running so it’s allowed” and “barging does not count as contact”!!  A complaint has been submitted to the league by several teams and an overhaul of reffing WF in Cornwall is underway.

3. Referees

The league sec asked for volunteers to form a committee to shape refereeing in WF and train refs from every team in the league.  Six people from Troon put themselves forward, but only Saints offered any other support in the whole of Cornwall.  Well done Troon for your volunteering spirit and desire to shape the game in the right way.

4. Numbers

The number of players attending training over the summer was worryingly low and for a couple of months we did not take in enough subs to cover the pitch fees.  Fortunately numbers have now picked up and we have a few new players so we’re looking in a better position.

5. Photos

Thankyou to everyone who turned out for team photo day.  We’re sorry it was a bit of a shambles.  With the arrival of the photos via email we’d like to remind everyone that the purchase of photos does not benefit WF but does add funds to the main club.

6. Kit shop

As you may know, we commissioned TAG Sports to set up an online shop for us so that you could buy your own kits and merchandise.  A whole year and many excuses later, this has still not materialised.  We have approached another online company and are currently working with them to get things set up.  We’ll keep you updated.

7. Finally thankyou to everyone who has stepped up to help with club admin over the last couple of months.  It has been very appreciated and shows us that the club is about friends who happen to play football together, not just about football alone.

July/August Newsletter

Welcome to the summer news and updates.

Are you watching the Women's world cup?  Keep an eye out for our daily updates to see how your team is doing.

The league team did us proud again in the July League day.  We finished second on the day after a strengthened Penwith took the lead.  Simon J was our player of the day scoring three goals.  What a guy!

The next league day is 13th August. Everyone is welcome to come along and support and to make themselves available for the squad.  There is now no limit to the size of the matchday squad and we know that seeing so many players in their lovely Troon kit as well as the supporters, the banners and signs and the snacks and drinks sends a really positive message to other teams and players.

Changes to Fridays:

Sadly we have had to add a new rule to Friday training.  This was in response to one of our much loved goal keepers and two other players deciding to play for Falmouth instead.  All three had been training with us and with tournament and  the league team, so when the goal keeper, a striker and a mid fielder suddenly and with little or no warning switched teams, we were then in a position of having trained and strategised with players who were no longer present. Only one of these players saw fit to let us know they were changing teams.  Two of them moved together and the third separately decided to play for Falmouth despite telling us he wanted to be available for Troon.  To say we all felt saddened, let down and a bit betrayed is an understatement.  This also meant that we had not been training another reserve goal keeper and other players had not had the opportunity to try playing in other positions.

The reasons given to us were mainly that we had such a large squad the players were not getting enough on field time and Falmouth, having far fewer players, could virtually guarantee playing all fixtures.  This is not the Troon ethic as we believe that everyone is a key player whether on the pitch or off.  We also have the humility to understand that in these specific circumstances, the team comes before the individual.

However we felt that the actions of these players significantly reduced our options for competitive fixtures (not because they are the best players, none are, but that they denied training opportunities to others) and so regretfully we introduced a new rule.  From now on you can only attend on a Friday if its your intention to play only for Troon (whether in league, tournament, 70s, 60s, 50s or ladies)...meaning that if you know you're going to represent another team in any competition, please only come on Wednesdays.  Everyone is welcome on a Wednesday.

We hope this explains the messaging you may have seen previously.  As always, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

May/June News

Troon AFC Walking Football News - May/June 2023

Hello! What an exciting couple of months we’ve had!

News Updates:

Our tournament was a great success with 15 teams playing from across Cornwall, Devon and Wales. On a gloriously sunny day Helston won the 50s cup with our very own Terry collecting the trophy on behalf of his new team; St Austell won the 60s cup in a close contest.  Troon 50s won the plaque to the  delight of  Dave and the team.

We also held the first ever Women’s Walking Football tournament in Cornwall which was won by Braunton and our diminished Troon women’s squad, we were competitive in every game. (Get well soon Sam and John who picked up injuries on the day)

Next came the first league day.  Troon AFC Walking Football got off to a great start in the 2023 Cornwall Walking Football League West. With goals being spread across the squad and only conceding 1 goal in 6 games giving us a very healthy return of 13 points from our opening 6 games.

We started with a tough test against a strong Falmouth side who were runners up in our festival last month. Some impressive saves from Chris in goal and some breathtaking passing patterns meant a 0-0 draw was seen as a decent start. From this point we went from strength to strength by putting in a stunning performance as a well worked goal from Simon J gave us a well deserved goal against Helston who won our tournament.

Whilst being cheered on by several members of the club who were not in the matchday squad our fine start continued as we beat a physical Roseland side 1-0 thanks to a fine goal from Pat. Next up we faced another physical side and produced one of the performances of the day as a goal from Markus was enough to collect all 3 points against a strong St Day side.

With the number of injuries in the group growing we rallied and continued our unbeaten start as goals from Simon H and Geoff were enough to see off a hard working St Agnes side. However we were denied an unbeaten day as we fell to defeat against a very good Penwith side in our final game of the day.

Overall an incredible first round of the league for Troon with 4 wins and a draw from our opening 6 games puts us in a good position going into the next round of games. The mood throughout the day was excellent as we were cheered on by club members who came to support despite not being in the matchday squad.

Squad: Chris, Clive, Dave S, Eddie, Geoff, Markus, Nigel, Pat, Phil, Simon H, Simon J

The final table from the day showed Troon as League leaders.  hooray!!

We held our annual awards night where trophies were awarded for:

Players’ Player of the Year was a tie between: Dave Sh and Ann

Club Person: Geoff

Unsung Hero: Eddie

Manager’s Player of the Year: Simon J

Well done and thank you to everyone who has supported us this year.  We’re proud of you all.

Changes:

We are making two slight changes to the way we run the club.

Friday is now only for people who might (one day) play for Troon.  All club members are welcome.  However if you play competitively for another team please do not attend on Fridays.  Wednesday sessions are open for everyone as usual.

We are setting up a Whatsapp group to send messages and updates more easily.  This will not be a chat group.  Only admins will be able to add messages. You will not be able to make comments.  It will however, have a facility where you can click one simple button and let us know whether you will be attending specific events.  We will be asking you to sign a slip giving us specific permission to add you to the group.  It’s helpful that as many people as possible do this so that we can improve keeping everyone informed.

Everyone needs to sign up with the FA or you won’t be allowed to play in any FA event.  Most people have done this already.  What’s new is that the FA are now requesting that everyone has a photo on their account.  You can do this yourself or we can do it for you, just ask.

March/April 23

Troon AFC Walking Football News March and April 2023

Hello, good evening and welcome to our latest newsletter (please imagine your own dramatic theme music at this point..)

Lots of lovely things going on at the club as always.  Here are the headlines..

Many thanks to Pete for serving as our FA rep this year.  Well done!  Pete is now making way for someone else to take up the baton.  If you would like to shape the future of the league and walking football in Cornwall please put yourself forward ASAP.  It just involves sharing information and 2 or 3 committee meetings per year. Go on…you know you want to…

Our Women’s team have met with the Women’s football coordinator from the CFA and discussed how to encourage more ladies to try our lovely sport.  Sam took the lead on this so well done and thank you to Sam.

First aid training…we are just waiting for the main club to confirm which days we will have the clubhouse and then we will run two FREE first aid course sessions on each of two days, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, making a total of four sessions.  Please sign up quickly when the dates are released as we can only manage a maximum of 8 participants at each session.

Dave has organised and run another quiz night and a social walk.  There has been loads of positive feedback so well done Dave and we are all looking forward to the next event.  Thank you also to Graham for causing brain ache and laughter in the right measures, well done. Get your walking shoes on for March.

We are going to be running our very own spring tournament again this year so add May 21st to your diaries.  Once again we will be the only tournament in Cornwall or Devon to offer 50s, 60s, 70s and Women’s groups.  Hooray for Troon AFC Walking Football!

There will soon be elections in the main club for their committee with post up for election of Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary.  Please think seriously about whether you can offer a few hours a week to shape the club as it moves forwards.  You’ll be given all the help and support you need to settle into the role. We have a great skills base in WF so who’s ready to help out a little more and share your lifetime of knowledge.

WFA League Update

Sadly we could not raise a squad in any age group (although the 60s came close) so this will have to wait until next year.  Many thanks to those who volunteered.

Club Communications

We think that one of the reasons we could not raise a team, besides you all being wonderful busy people, is that members may not be checking the website and facebook for updates and news.  You don’t have to look at both, just whichever you prefer.  Some news is time sensitive but we always try to give you at least a week’s notice of upcoming events and opportunities so please try to check in at least once per week to see what’s going on at the club.  For example, our award winning website troonafcwalkingfootball.com has been running for 4 years and is updated two or three times per week with news and information and yet we can see from site information that only 15 or so people are looking at it in any one week (we can’t see who reads the site, just the number of visitors.  We are not collecting your info.) We have over 50 people on our books so there are a lot of people who’ve never seen the website.  Please go and have a look at the information your club provides…you might be surprised!

Women’s Walking Football

Many of you will have noticed that we have been working hard to promote women’s walking football within the club.  We are the only club in Cornwall to have a women’s team which is amazing but we need a squad and not a team to offer Women only training and attend the many ladies tournaments around the country.  So please let all the lovely ladies in your lives know about this initiative and let's see whether we can form a Cornwall representative team!  You can support the team if you are on facebook by following on https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087794433176

Referee Training

With many governing bodies in Walking Football and each having slightly different rules, the more people we can have qualified as refs in each governing body, the better.  We have already got 6 FA qualified walking football refs and the WFA also offer ref training with the next session being in Tiverton in February.

FA ref training will be held in Bodmin and is free.

WFA ref training is held regionally, the next one in Tiverton, but we are negotiating for them to provide a session in Cornwall.  These will cost about £50 to attend.

Both groups have the same training format.  It will be an all day session with the morning indoors looking at theory, rules and scenarios.  The afternoon would be outdoors having a go at being a ref in a short game, just like we do in training.

If you are interested in attending either or both of these sessions please message the club and we will add your name to the waiting list.

Quiz night 2 - The Return

The first social event of 2023 is scheduled and we're ready to go . . .

Graham is busy compiling Questions and we are all set for Quiz Night 2

THURSDAY 23rd February - 7 PM @ Troon AFC Club House

The last one was a great success and I'm certain that this one will be just as good, or possibly even better. I'm equally sure we can challenge the previous winners as well, so fire up Wikipedia and get swotting!

Tea and coffee will be provided, the bar will be open and cost of entry is as previously, a packet of biscuits or cake etc. (Homemade welcome)

Please let Dave know if you're planning to be there. (E-mail, text, phone, tell him in person)

First Aid Training

We are offering free basic first aid training to all club members.  The session will be for half a day and cover immediate temporary first aid, CPR, Defibrillator use and medical emergencies common in walking football.  These sessions are informal and will not qualify you to use it anywhere except in walking football but will be similar to an Emergency First Aid at Work Course.  You don’t need any experience in first aid and sessions will be informal and fun.

We are intending to offer an afternoon session and an evening session so that you can choose one.

Please contact the club to express an interest so that we can gauge numbers.  We will then book dates in Feb and/or March.

In the meantime the FA offers an online first aid course which costs £30 and is open to anyone to do at home.

https://learn.englandfootball.com/courses/medical/introduction-to-first-aid-in-football

These skills could save a life, on or off the pitch so please…consider taking advantage of our club’s free courses.

And finally…

A big thank you to Anthony who has put a lot of work and effort into making cards for everyone with people’s pictures and names on. This is to help us learn each other’s names.  Thank you … umm…what’s your name again?

Troon AFC Walking Football News…May/June 2022

Hello you lovely Walking Footballers!  First of all a big thank you to everyone who played and/or helped out on our tournament day.  It was an amazing day and the best tournament we have attended if we say so ourselves.  There has been so much positive feedback from all the teams attending and from the FA about the organisation, the atmosphere and the ‘warm Cornish welcome’.... But especially the excellent timekeeping!

Also a HUGE thank you to Dave and the crew for running sessions and keeping your WF going while we dealt with surgery and covid. You’re all superstars!

There are lots of dates and some important news to think about this month so grab your calendar and a cuppa.

News

The Jubilee match on June 5th has been cancelled by the club.  Thank you to everyone who made themselves available for the event and enjoy your free weekend.

The Cornwall League is going to run this summer.  We are only allowed to enter one team and so we have done that.  It will be 50+ , mixed men and women and will be held at Cornwall College (where we train on a Friday) so it's nice and local. It will be held on one day in June, one day in July, one day in August and Finals on a day in September.  You do not have to be available for all 4 dates we can pick our team before each league day.  In order to play in this league all players will need to be ’registered’ with Cornwall FA.  This is a two step process.  Step 1: You obtain what the FA call a ‘FAN’ number from the FA.  This is only available online and if you have an email address.  We will help you to do this if you need help and can even provide you with an email address.  Step 2 : We use your FAN, email address and contact details to register you on the Club’s FA website as a Troon AFC WF player.  Once you are registered with one club you will not be able to play in an FA event for another club without a ‘transfer process’.  Don’t worry too much about all of this.  We will send out another email in a week or so giving you step by step help and you can also ask Sarah for help at training if you bring your phone, tablet or other device.  DON’T PANIC!!

We have been invited to play in a WF Tournament in Barry, South Wales.  We can enter Ladies, 50s, 60s and 70s categories.  This will be in July.  This tournament clashes with one of the three league dates but we will be playing one team in the league that day and there will be a group going to Wales as well.  It’s OK to be registered for the league and to make the one off trip to Wales.

You have the chance to be ‘another brick in the wall’ at the clubhouse.  For a small donation you can have your name and chosen text forever inscribed on a brick or tile in the new clubhouse.  See the website for details.

The Cornwall Air Ambulance football team (including the son of our very own Rob) are playing Thames Valley Air Ambulance football team in the first ever charity event of this type in Cornwall.  Please come along and support this amazing charity and local resource.  All funds go to the Air Ambulance charities.  If you drive to the club you’ll be asked to donate £5 to do so.
If you choose to walk in you’ll be asked to donate whatever you can afford into a collection bucket.

We have entered two teams into the St Day Tournament in July.  No registration necessary, just add your name to the sign up sheet.  We finished second in this tournament last year so let's see if we can get gold this year!

Our annual Awards and social night will be held at the end of the month on a Monday 6-8pm at Troon.  It's the normal training night so please come along and support the club and cheer the folk YOU have voted for in our three award categories.  There will be a short half an hour kick about match and then we will go into the new clubhouse for pasties and cream tea.  Please sign up to let us know you’ll be there so we don’t waste food.  Bring a chair!

The Welsh Open Event has been cancelled but if it starts up again we will enter a team or teams so think about whether you’d be willing to travel for this one day event.  Date TBA

Please make sure you have returned your Tournament Kit…we need it for other events … and please make sure that you have completed the new season sign up forms.  Don’t worry..Sarah will nag you if you have to do either of these things!

News…

This month we celebrated Clive playing for Cornwall against Devon in Bodmin and Christine and Lin joining England training in Waltham Abbey. James and Dave have been to the FA refs training course and are now officially qualified FA Walking Football referees, Pete is also going to another session later in the month, which means we now have 4 fully qualified refs… so we all have to be good now! Well done to you all. You've done us proud

We will be moving our Wednesday indoor  and Friday outdoor training to all outdoors at Troon AFC Grouter Park from April. The club has allocated us a Monday and Friday time slot (they have 17+ other teams to accommodate as well!) so our new training days will be Monday 6-8pm and Fridays 7-8pm.

We opened applications for our upcoming tournament on May 1st and have 17 teams entered across the 50s, 60s, 70s and ladies categories. We have had to turn some teams away due to late applications and have teams coming from Wales, Cornwall and Devon.  Age UK will be sponsoring the event so our thanks go to them. ✔️

It's going to be a fantastic day. There is still time to sign up for one of our teams if you'd like to join in. If you would rather not play or are carrying an injury but are free that day, please let us know. You can support the club by helping out in lots of ways on the day. 📖

Defibrillator Update :

Exciting news....Our new defibrillator has arrived! Our new pitchside defibrillator arrived today, ahead of schedule. We are so pleased and proud of all our members for their donations. We had donations online through gofund.me, donations of cash, donations from the Redruth Lions, the Royal British Legion and FWBLtd.

We have bought the defibrillator and have a little left over for training for anyone who wants it.

We are going to keep donations open and use the money for training equipment, room hire, replacement pads and batteries for the AED etc. So if you were thinking of donating and haven't yet, please do so. We still need your support.

We intend to run free training in basic first aid, cpr and using the defibrillator for anyone in Troon AFC Walking who wants it, then free training to anyone in Troon AFC who wants it and finally training for a nominal fee to anyone in the Walking Football wider community. We strongly believe that this training should be available to everyone and that the more people that have even basic knowledge the better. A little is better than nothing. You might be able to save a life or help out in an emergency. Watch this space for training sessions in the new year. Look on the website in the ‘First Aid and Physio’ tab for first aid videos and a handbook to read online or print.

News and Events:

We are saddened to lose our lovely team mate Tony Christopher, who  died this week. Tony was a much loved and appreciated member of our club, a true gentleman,  who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts, sympathies and condolences are with his wife Liz, son Paul and the rest of his family. We will let you know the funeral date when it is arranged for those of us who would like to attend.

Would you like the chance to try out for the WFA Cornwall Over 70s Walking Football squad? The get together is on Sunday 5th December at the sports hall, Tregorrick Park. If you're over 70 you can just turn up to this event but it would be helpful to let them know numbers so please message both us and the organiser below to let us know. Email alan_read@rocketmail.com

Do you feel like doing more for our club and for Walking Football in Cornwall? We are looking for a new FA rep for the club. Do you think you could help with this? It would mean attending small group meetings, usually near Bodmin at the FA office on a weds evening not more than once a month (there have been only two meetings this year and before lockdown they were every two or three months). It's not big and official, it's small and friendly with reps from different WF clubs making arrangements for leagues and tournaments. We feel that we've done our stint for three years now and would like to give someone else a chance. You'd just need to attend meetings and feed back to us so that we can advertise events and general goings on. Interested? The next meeting is to be held at Bodmin FA, 7pm on Wednesday 24th November 2021 to discuss and plan future events. There'll be discussion about age groups and rules for the Newquay festival and hopefully some dates set for future events and next year's league.

The FA will be holding two festivals in tandem at the same venue. They are aiming for all matches to be officiated by FA qualified referees who have also attended a Walking Football workshop. Venue: Newquay Tretherras School. Date: Sunday 12/12/21Time: 3:00pm arrival / 6:00pm finish.  Competitions: Over 50's - On the 3G AstroTurf Over 65's - Indoor Sports Hall

Troon AFC Walking Football need a defibrillator. We need £1100. (We have £565 banked so far and £150 cash plus £100 from the Lions, a promise of £250 from a business, a promised donation of £200 and the Legion considering making a donation as well).  All donations, however great or small will help. Please share this link with all your family, friends and colleagues. You can message the link, add it to your Facebook page, email it to all your contacts or just tell people about it. Copy this link and share it everywhere....https://gofund.me/3672ea9d.  You can also donate cash at any training session. Any funds raised over and above the defibrillator cost will go towards training people to use it and for new  first aid supplies.

This month we have been featured in both the Falmouth Packet and on the Saturday morning sports show on BBC radio Cornwall, we are the only team in Cornwall to have entered the WFA Southwest league and although this event was subsequently cancelled we are still proud that we stood ready. We are the only team in Cornwall to be able to field an over 75s team, an over 70s team, an over 65s team, an over 60s team and an over 50s team. We are also very close to being able to field a ladies team. We are the only club in Cornwall to allow people of all ages to play and one of only two clubs to allow gents and ladies to participate together. We have players who have represented England, Wales and Cornwall in Walking Football matches. There is a lot to be proud of and it all happens because of you. Keep up the good work!

HOMEWORK… Please let us know the following (either your yes or your no answer please)...Would got like to be our shiny new FA rep? Do you want to play in the Newquay festival and if so in which age group? And finally, if you haven't donated to the defibrillator fund please contribute by either donating online, donating cash at training or by sharing the information with your family and friends so that as many people as possible have the chance to donate. Thankyou.

Walking Football Newsletter Sept/Oct 2021

It’s been quite a year hasn’t it? But we’re glad to be back with walking football and have enjoyed an amazing summer of fun, friendship, fair play and footie.

There is lots of news and things are moving quite quickly for walking football in Cornwall.  There are lots of new opportunities for all age groups to play at different levels and we will be looking for some help and to appoint volunteer age group coordinators to make sure everyone gets the information they need.  More on this later.

Club Improvements: Troon AFC have had to put their clubhouse plans on hold temporarily and as you’ll have seen , building work has stopped for now.

Walking Football continues to move forwards and we have decided to use an online polling system for you to let us know which events you would like to attend.  We trialled this system with disappointing results as only 7 people actually tried to use it.  It’s very simple, you don’t need an account you just click on the link we’ll give you, read the info about the event and then click on yes, no or maybe.  It’s equally important that you tell us that you’re not interested in an event, partly so that we can stop nagging you but mostly so that we can coordinate teams without wondering ‘are they not interested or did they just not vote’.  With five upcoming events on multiple dates, we cannot coordinate people telling us across all the platforms we use, something will be missed.

So it’s vital that everyone familiarises themselves with the voting system and uses it when asked.  We don’t ask much and this is just three clicks on your computer, tablet or phone. So please, please, please use it.  It will REALLY help us.

Dates and Events

  1. Winter Home - We will be back at Pool Academy sports hall in Church Road, Pool,  Redruth Cornwall TR15 3PZ from the first WEDNESDAY in October...that’s WEDNESDAY 6TH OCTOBER.  You’ll need to wear trainers please and if you’ve not been there before, there’s lots of parking so don’t worry about that.
  2. Our Friday sessions are going well and we are looking to extend this by booking an extra outdoor session from October, probably at Camborne College Astro.  More news when we have it.
  3. The Cornwall FA are back up and running and there will hopefully be some festivals and a new Cornwall FA league running soon.  We have no more information for this as yet.
  4. The ‘Cornwall Over 65s Team’ - This is not an FA run team but is being coordinated by St Austell WF at the moment.  They want names of anyone aged 65 or over who would like to attend training and selection days on 19th and 26th SEPTEMBER at St Austell. It is urgent that everyone lets us know their interest (yes/no/maybe) in this team by contacting us via the club poll system by clicking on this link or copying it into your browser: https://whenavailable.com/event/4BZEWvtqHpJv3iy57
  5. The WFA Over 70s League - This will happen over the following dates throughout the year and there will be four other teams participating. If you’d like to be part of this, you need to be able to commit to attending on the following dates (at least most of them and ‘in principle’).  Over 70s league dates are: 3rd OCT; 28th NOV; 30th JAN; 27th MAR; 22nd MAY.  Matches will be at Ottery St Mary which is just outside Exeter and the same venue as the previous 70s Tournament.  It will be 12-3pm.  If you’d like to enter this league with your over 70s friends please use the link below to let us know https://whenavailable.com/event/x6VT33wid8Vp4YZ37  or speak to us on Monday.  You need to be 69+ to enter.  We would also like someone to step up and be the 70s League Coordinator for us.  You do not have to be over 70 for this role.  This would just be to make sure that everyone in the 70s team is kept up to date via email, message or phone call, with dates and transport arrangements and to disseminate information.  Let us know on Monday if you feel you could help out by doing this for us.
  6. The WFA Over 50s League - This will happen over the following dates throughout the year and there will be several other teams participating. If you’d like to be part of this, you need to be able to commit to attending on the following dates (at least most of them and ‘in principle’).  Over 50s league dates are: 19th SEPT; 14th NOV; 16TH JAN; 6TH MAR; 8TH MAY .  Matches will be at Ottery St Mary which is just outside Exeter. It will be 12-3pm.  If you’d like to enter this league with your over 50s friends please use the link below to let us know https://whenavailable.com/event/fQdgqSHH5etNJYti6 .  You need to be 50 by Jan 2022 to enter.  We would also like someone to step up and be the 50s League Coordinator for us.  You do not have to be over 50 for this role.  This would just be to make sure that everyone in the 50s squad is kept up to date with dates and transport arrangements and to disseminate information.  Let us know on Monday if you feel you could help out by doing this for us.

In Other News

We have applied for several grants to get a defibrillator for the club but have no news on that yet.  If anyone knows a company who might like to donate one for us, please let us know.

We have bought a second kit in Gold (the St Day teams have seen it already) for our teams as they are out and about representing our lovely club.  We ask that everyone has shin pads.  You might want to get black shorts and dimple soled boots suitable for 3G and 4G pitches.

Don’t forget we have an online calendar to keep you on track, you can find it by clicking on the link here or by copy and pasting this into your browser
